The project is being funded by two FAA grants:

  • A $52.7 million Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grant

The AIP grant is a federal-aid program that provides funding for the planning and development of public-use airports.

The SDG program provides funding for projects that are not eligible for AIP funding.

Project To Improve Safety And Efficiency

The project is expected to improve the safety and efficiency of Kona International Airport.

The new runway will be wider and longer than the existing runway, which will allow for larger aircraft to land and take off.

The new runway lighting will be more efficient and will provide better visibility for pilots.
