Accused Gilgo Beach Serial Killer Rex Heuermann Faces Six Murder Charges

Charges Expand Three Decades

Rex Heuermann, the 60-year-old former architect, has been formally charged in the deaths of six women spanning three decades. The new charges include second-degree murder in the deaths of Jessica Taylor and Maureen Brainard-Barnes.

Suffolk County Prosecutors

Suffolk County prosecutors argued against bail for Heuermann in a 32-page document that detailed the investigation into his alleged crimes. The document includes evidence that Heuermann allegedly kept a "blueprint to kill" that outlined his plans for the murders.

Accused Long Island Serial Killer

Heuermann, who was already charged with four murders, appeared in court for an arraignment hearing where he was charged with the additional two murders. He is currently being held without bail.

Previous Arrests and Charges

Heuermann was arrested in July 2023 for the murders of four women whose bodies were found in 2010. The release of new evidence led to the additional charges against him.

Decades-Old Crimes

The expanded charges reveal that Heuermann may have started preying on young women earlier than first believed. One of the new charges relates to the 1993 murder of Sandra Costilla, whose case had not previously been linked to the Gilgo Beach killings.

Ongoing Investigation

Prosecutors allege that Heuermann's alleged murder plan involved leaving a trail of young women's bodies on the South Shore of Long Island. Investigators continue to dig into the evidence against him.
